full moon fasting

Full Moon Fasting Ceremony

After an incredible first year dancing at the Moon Dance (Atlachinolli Meztli) in 2018, I traveled, as I did every year, to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to visit my mother.

This time, however, was different. What was meant to be a short visit extended to six monthsa journey of deep healing between mother and daughter. During this time, I witnessed my mother undergo two major artery surgeries, and I found myself returning to Mexico City, the place I had left 13 years before.

It became a physical and spiritual recapitulation of my life, an integration of the many versions of myself. In this transformative moment, I shaved my hair off, a symbolic death and rebirth into my truest self.

By summer 2019, I was back in Switzerland, attending my second year at the Moon Dance in Austria, this time to give thanks and celebrate the joy of being alive.

That winter, I returned once more to Playa del Carmen. My mother was doing better, and life carried on. A small article about a mysterious virus appeared in a Swiss newspaper. I returned home to Bern just before New Year's 2020, unaware of the global shift that was about to unfold.

A Call to Prayer Under the Full Moon

On the Full Moon of January 2020, with the intention of planting the Moon Dance prayer in Switzerland, we gathered for a weekend of weaving magic, a Temazcalli with the Moon Dance sisters living in Switzerland.

During this gathering, I was invited to hold space for the Full Moon of March 2020 in Bern, sharing the altar and wisdom of the Mexihca tradition. On March 8th, International Women’s Day, seven women stood together, embodying the seven directions.

One week later, the world stood still. Humanity was told to stay home. Portals opened. Suddenly, we were all connected, united through the windows of our screens.

For me, this pause arrived at the perfect moment. I needed to step out of time and bring structure to my life.

As a Moon Dancer, I had already experienced the medicine of fasting for three years, and I had found it to be a powerful tool for self-discipline and spiritual motivation. In the silence of the world’s pause, my personal prayer became clear:

On the Full Moon of April 2021, I completed a 13-month cycle of fasting every Full Moon for four days and four nights.

A New Cycle Begins

As this cycle closed, I realized the Moon Dance prayer was only four months away, a powerful sign to honor the completion of one cycle and step into a new one.

From that moment, I felt called to share this practice with women who wished to experience fasting as an act of self-love, devotion, and empowerment, whether as a preparation for the Moon Dance or as a personal journey. (You don’t need to be a Moon Dancer to participate.)

How It Works

We begin three days before the Full Moon, entering a water fast that we complete on the night of the Full Moon.

At the end of the last four-month cycle of fasting, I offered a Goddess Night, an integration ritual designed to ground, activate the heart, and expand vision.

The Power of Ceremony

This sacred practice brings balance and alignment, preparing us not only for the Moon Dance but also for daily life. It serves as a guide to help us manifest our prayers for the coming year, whether in love, work, health, abundance, or personal transformation.
